The ego thrives on fear and a sense of being separate from life, keeping you stuck in the illusion that you are a fragile self that must be defended. It constantly reinforces the illusion of a fragile self that needs protection.
If you saw the truth — that you're not who you think you are — it would lose its grip. And that scares it more than anything, because without the illusion of control, the ego has no purpose.
